This flowery boot became
the summer ’03 pin-up poster for the Glass Slipper Exhibition at the
Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto.
Here’s the story that accompanied the piece:
The Fairies’ Farewell: He got up with the
sun and clambered into his overalls. It was moving day and he had only
a short time to say good-bye to his favourite spots in the woods. He
leapt down the stairs and flew out the door, passed the garden gate
and was out in the meadow when he spotted the first message: “Follow
the path of bluebells we have laid... BB”, written in tiny script on
a delicate bluebell. He tucked the flower in his pocket and carried
on toward the woods - but more slowly now ... for there were notes and
riddles to be found all around. On the flowers, mushrooms, acorns, and
oak leaves were written messages from the fairies he had known all his
life: Downey Greenbodkin, Dusty Lightfoot, Ambrosia Springbrook and
even Mother Elderbark, - just to name a few!
When his pockets were full, he scrambled
back to the garden shed and gently tucked the little treasures into
his grandpa’s old Wellington boot. Just then, his grandma called him
for breakfast, so he ran up the path and left the old Wellie on the
porch while he went inside. When he came out again, he discovered that
the fairies had used their green magic to turn the boot and its contents
into glass so he could keep their messages to guide him and comfort
him wherever he went in the world.
